Living in Houston, we regularly see " free" puppies being given away...either online or in parking lots. For one, it is never recommended to give pups away for free as sadly they can fall into the wrong hands, including those who are looking for bait dogs.
Secondly, if you get a free puppy, you must understand these puppies are not dewormed or vaccinated, so you will have to spend money at a vet to get them healthy and current on shots. I've seen too many times people looking to rehome their free puppy, because they didn't appreciate the true costs associated with getting a puppy.
One might think the adoption fees from a local rescue are high (range anywhere from $150 - $300), but those fees typically (and should) at minimum cover: dewormer and 2 sets of vaccinations . Those with a higher fee also cover the microchip, rabies shot, and the spay/neuter. Rescues get discounts at vet partners, so these costs are drastically higher if you were to pay for all of it on your own. Puppies adopted from a rescue are also coming from a foster home, so they have been socialized, cared for, assessed, and started some form of training. The foster's job is to help find the perfect match for each puppy based on thier personalities.
So if you are seeking a puppy, please choose rescue, or at least do your research. At the end if the day, you get what you pay for.
